Everyone upgrades the front of the truck first. Brighter headlights, LED fogs, a light bar — that’s where the attention goes. But the back of a Silverado is where two of the truck’s most common and most annoying problems live: a third brake light that leaks water into the cab, and tail light circuits that corrode and quit. Both are cheap to fix once you know what you’re looking at, and both are prime candidates for an LED upgrade while you’re back there.

The third brake light leak — read this even if your lights work

If you have ever found a wet headliner, a foggy dome light, a musty smell, or water on the back seat after rain, do not start at the rear glass or the cab seams. Start at the third brake light — the high-mount stop lamp (its proper name is the CHMSL, Center High-Mounted Stop Lamp) molded into the top rear of the cab, often sharing a housing with the cargo/bed light.

Here’s the mechanism, and it’s the same across the GMT800, GMT900 and early K2XX trucks:

  • The lamp sits in a cut-out in the sheet metal, sealed by a foam gasket.
  • That gasket bakes in the sun and hardens, shrinks, and loses its seal — a decade-plus of heat cycling does it in.
  • Water runs down the back of the cab, finds the failed gasket, and travels inside the cab down the headliner instead of shedding off the roof.
  • It shows up as a wet dome light, a stained or sagging headliner, or drips onto the rear seat — far enough from the actual entry point that owners chase the wrong leak for months.

The fix is not exotic. Pull the lamp (a couple of nuts from inside, behind the headliner trim), clean the mating surface, and replace the gasket and reseal — a bead of quality butyl or RTV around a fresh gasket, or a whole new lamp assembly if the lens is cracked or hazed. Torque it snug, not gorilla-tight; overtightening distorts the housing and starts a new leak. This one repair has saved more Silverado headliners than any amount of glass resealing.

Tail light failures: it’s usually the socket, not the bulb

When a Silverado tail or brake light goes dark, the reflex is to swap the bulb. Sometimes that’s it. But on high-mileage GMT900 and K2XX trucks especially, the more common failure is corrosion and heat damage at the socket and the tail lamp’s little circuit board, not a burned-out filament.

What to look for when you pull the assembly:

  • Melted or discolored sockets. The 3157 dual-filament bulb runs hot; a poor ground or a marginal connection cooks the socket over time. A browned, brittle, or partially melted socket is your answer.
  • Green/white corrosion on the contacts. Moisture gets into the housing (sometimes from the same kind of gasket failure that plagues the third brake light) and corrodes the terminals until the circuit is intermittent — the classic “works when I tap it” tail light.
  • Cracked lens or fogged housing. A hairline crack lets water in, which feeds the corrosion above. Once a housing is compromised, cleaning the contacts is a band-aid; the assembly is the real fix.

If the socket and board are cooked, cleaning contacts buys you weeks, not years. A replacement tail light assembly — OEM take-off or a new unit — is the durable repair, and it’s a five-minute job on most Silverados: two fasteners, pull the assembly straight back, transfer or replace the bulb harness, reinstall.

Many 2019+ (T1XX) trucks and higher K2XX trims came with factory LED tail lamps that have no serviceable bulb. On those, a burned-out segment or a cracked lens means an assembly replacement, and the used/OEM market on eBay Motors is usually the sane way to buy one without paying full dealer price.

Going LED at the back — the plug-and-play caveat

Rear LED conversions are worth it: instant-on brake lights are a genuine safety gain (the light reaches full brightness a fraction of a second sooner than an incandescent), and the modern smoked/sequential look is popular for a reason. But the rear circuit has one trap the front doesn’t.

Lower current means the truck can misread the change. Drop LED bulbs into a brake/turn circuit designed for incandescent draw and you can get:

  • Hyper-flash — the turn signal blinks rapidly because the flasher sees “less load” as “bulb out.”
  • A bulb-out warning on the dash for the same reason.
  • Dim or flickering LEDs if the truck runs a small “parking lamp” current through the circuit to check it.

Three honest ways to handle it:

  1. Load resistors sized to the socket — cheap, effective, but they get hot and add wiring under the panel.
  2. An LED-compatible flasher or a canbus-friendly bulb — cleaner where it fits your year.
  3. A full plug-and-play LED tail light assembly — usually the best answer, because the manufacturer has already built in the correct load handling and you get a matched lens, board, and gasket in one part.

Whichever route you take, keep it legal and visible: a working red brake and tail light and a clear amber/red turn signal are required everywhere, and a heavily smoked lens that dims the output below daylight-visible is what fails inspection. Bright and tasteful beats blacked-out and ticketed.

Why is water leaking into my Silverado's cab from the headliner?
On a huge number of GMT800, GMT900 and K2XX trucks, the culprit is the third brake light — the cargo/high-mount stop lamp molded into the top rear of the cab. Its foam gasket hardens and shrinks with age and sun, and rainwater or car-wash spray runs down behind the headliner, showing up as a wet dome light, a stained headliner, or water dripping onto the rear seat. It's one of the most common water-intrusion complaints on the truck, and it's almost always the third brake light gasket rather than the rear glass. What size bulb does a Silverado tail light use?
