Towing & Hauling for the Chevy Silverado

Hitches, tow mirrors, brake controllers, and towing accessories to safely pull trailers, boats, and campers behind your Silverado.

0 parts

Towing safely with a Silverado is about the whole chain, not just the hitch. Match the receiver and ball-mount rating to your trailer, add a weight-distribution hitch once you're pulling anything heavy, and — critically — wire in a proper brake controller so the trailer's brakes do their share. Tow mirrors and a transmission cooler round out a truck that's actually set up to pull.

On the HD trucks the factory integrated brake controller is excellent; on half-tons and older trucks an aftermarket proportional controller is the upgrade that makes towing feel planted. Keep an eye on the 6L80/6L90 transmission's torque-converter behavior under load — our common-problems guide covers the tells.

Towing & Hauling FAQ

Do I need a brake controller to tow with my Silverado?
If your trailer has electric brakes — most do above a couple thousand pounds — yes, and it's often legally required. Many HD Silverados have one built in; half-tons usually need an aftermarket proportional controller.
What's a weight-distribution hitch and do I need one?
It spreads trailer tongue weight across both axles for level, stable towing. Once you're near the trailer's rated tongue weight — heavier campers and enclosed trailers — it's strongly recommended. See the towing accessories guide.
Why do I need tow mirrors?
Extended tow mirrors give you a clear view down the sides of a wide trailer, eliminating the blind spots factory mirrors leave. They're one of the cheapest, highest-value towing upgrades.
