Choosing Silverado LED Headlights: Bulbs vs. Housings & Fitment
Upgrade your Chevy Silverado's lighting the right way — LED bulb swaps vs. full housing assemblies, beam pattern, color temperature, and what actually fits.

“LED headlight upgrade” covers two different jobs on a Silverado, and picking the wrong one wastes money. This guide splits the two paths, tells you which generations can even take a bulb swap, and points you to new parts on Amazon and used/OEM lighting on eBay Motors.
Bulb swap or full assembly — and which one your generation allows
- LED bulb swap: you replace the halogen bulb with an LED bulb sized to the same socket, inside your existing housing. Cheapest and quickest, but it only works on a housing that takes a replaceable bulb, and only looks right if the housing itself is still clear.
- Full LED housing assembly: you replace the entire headlight unit with one built for LED output and beam pattern. More expensive, but it’s the only option on a sealed factory housing, and it also fixes hazy or yellowed lenses a bulb swap can’t touch.
Whether a bulb swap is even on the table depends on what your Silverado left the factory with:
| Generation | Years | Stock low beam | Bulb swap possible? |
|---|---|---|---|
| GMT800 | 1999-2007 | 9006 halogen | Yes, on all trims |
| GMT900 / K2XX | 2007-2018 | H11 halogen (base/mid trims) | Yes, on halogen trims only |
| GMT900 / K2XX | 2007-2018 | Factory HID (higher trims) | No — sealed, replace the assembly |
| T1XX | 2019-present | H11 halogen (WT) or factory LED (most trims) | Halogen WT only; LED trims need a full assembly |
If your truck falls in the “no” row, don’t buy an LED bulb kit for it — it has nowhere to plug in. Full bulb sizes for every position, not just the low beam, are in the bulb size guide; if you’re not sure which generation you have, start at the generations & fitment reference.
What actually matters once you know your path
- Beam pattern and cutoff. This is everything. A good upgrade lights up the road without blinding oncoming traffic. A bad one scatters glare and gives you less usable light.
- Color temperature. Aim for ~5000-6000K pure white. Skip the blue-tinted “style” bulbs — they perform worse in weather.
- Connector and housing shape. GMT800, GMT900/K2XX, and T1XX headlights aren’t interchangeable — confirm the part is listed for your exact generation, not just “Silverado.”
- Aim. Always re-aim after any lighting change, bulb or full assembly.
How to buy
- New LED bulbs and full assemblies: Amazon Automotive — browse the lighting category.
- Used or OEM housings and factory HID/LED assemblies: eBay Motors, via the search buttons above — the only real market for a sealed factory unit that isn’t sold new.
Once the headlights are sorted, the fog light & cab marker guide covers the fog bulb sizes by generation, why the fogs cut out with the high beams, and what it takes to retrofit fog lamps into a truck built with blank filler panels instead.
