The big one: AFM / DFM lifter failure and oil consumption (5.3L & 6.2L)
If you only read one section, read this one. The most-discussed Silverado engine issue is tied to Active Fuel Management (AFM) and its successor Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) — the cylinder-deactivation systems on the Gen IV and Gen V 5.3L (and 6.2L) V8s.
What goes wrong, in two flavors:
- Oil consumption (mostly 2007–2013 5.3L). The AFM pressure-relief valve in the oil pan can spray oil at the cylinder walls, and combined with worn valve-stem seals it burns oil with no leak and often no smoke. Owners find the truck a quart or more low between changes. Fixes range from an updated PCV/oil-separator setup to a full AFM delete/disable (tune plus a delete kit).

6L80 / 6L90 torque-converter shudder (2014–2018)
The six-speed automatic behind many 2014–2018 trucks is known for a torque-converter shudder — a shimmy or vibration felt as the converter locks up around 25–45 mph, often described as driving over rumble strips.
Here’s the good news most owners don’t hear: it’s usually the transmission fluid, not the transmission. GM’s own service fix in many cases was a complete fluid flush with the updated Dexron spec — the additive package in the old fluid degrades and the converter clutch starts to grab unevenly. Caught early, a proper flush makes it disappear. Let it go for tens of thousands of miles and you can glaze the converter clutch to where it needs a replacement torque converter.

Fuel pump & fuel-level sensor (high-mileage, all gens)
The in-tank fuel-pump module is a wear item on any high-mileage truck, and the Silverado is no exception. Two symptoms show up:
- Hard starts / stalling / no-start as the pump weakens — classic failing-pump behavior.
- A stuck or wrong fuel gauge, because the level-sensor (sending unit) is part of the same in-tank module and its resistor card wears.

The single most recognizable interior complaint on the GMT900 trucks (2007–2013 — the “New Body Style” generation per the Chevrolet Silverado production history on Wikipedia): the dashboard cracks, almost always starting at the passenger airbag seam and near the defroster vents. Heat and UV do it, and once it starts it spreads.

Duramax fuel system: CP4 and the serviceable filter (diesel)
The 6.6L Duramax is a genuinely tough engine, but the LML-era (2011–2016) trucks brought the Bosch CP4.2 injection pump, which is more sensitive to fuel quality and lubricity than the older CP3. In a worst case a CP4 failure can send metal through the fuel system — an expensive event diesel owners take seriously.
