Get the compound right and you get quiet, confident braking that lasts; get it wrong and you’ll chase squeal, dust, and fade for years. The one question that picks your pad
Before you compare a single product, answer this honestly: what’s the heaviest thing your Silverado does on a regular basis? Not its lightest day — its heaviest. A 1500 that commutes empty and tows a small trailer twice a year has completely different needs from a 2500HD that pulls a fifth-wheel every weekend. Your pads have to survive your worst regular duty cycle, so that’s the number you build around.

Ceramic pads — the daily-driver default
Ceramic pads use a friction material of ceramic fibers with a little embedded metal. They’re what most Silverado 1500s wear from the factory, and for good reason:
- Quiet. Ceramic runs the softest, most refined braking feel of the common compounds.
- Clean. They throw off a light, pale dust instead of the black grime that coats wheels — and what dust there is tends not to stick.
- Rotor-friendly. They’re gentle on rotors, so your discs last longer.
Their one real weakness is sustained high heat. Push a ceramic street pad hard on a long mountain grade with a loaded trailer and it can fade. For an unloaded or lightly loaded half-ton, that ceiling is rarely a problem — which is exactly why they’re the default.
Best for: daily-driven 1500s, mostly-empty trucks, anyone who hates brake dust on their wheels.
Semi-metallic pads — the towing workhorse
Semi-metallic pads are 30-65% metal (steel, copper, iron), and that metal content is the whole story. Metal moves heat, so these pads shrug off the temperatures that make ceramics fade. They also bite harder when cold, which you feel the first stop on a frosty morning.
The trade-offs are honest: more dust, a bit more noise, and slightly faster rotor wear than ceramic. On a truck that works, most owners take that deal gladly.
Best for: 1500s and HDs that tow regularly, mountain driving, anyone who’s felt their brakes go soft under load.
Severe-duty / heavy-duty pads — for trucks that earn their keep
Severe-duty (sometimes called “police,” “fleet,” or “extreme”) pads are engineered for the highest heat and the heaviest loads. On the 2500HD and 3500HD, a severe-duty compound is often what the truck already left the factory with, because those trucks are expected to haul near capacity.
If you regularly tow at or near your rated capacity, or you’ve experienced fade even with a good semi-metallic pad, this is where you look first. They cost a little more and can be a touch noisier when cold, but they hold up when a lighter pad would quit.
Best for: 2500/3500HDs, near-capacity towing, commercial and fleet use.
Organic (NAO) pads — worth knowing, rarely the pick
Non-asbestos organic (NAO) pads are made from softer fibers like rubber, glass, and resin. They’re quiet and easy on rotors but wear fast and fade early under heat — which is why you’ll almost never want them on a truck. Mentioned here only so you can recognize and skip the cheapest bargain-bin sets: on a Silverado, an organic pad is usually a false economy.
How to read an edge code (buy like a pro)
Every quality pad has a stamped edge code on the side of the friction material — something like FF or GG. Those two letters are the pad’s friction rating: cold coefficient first, hot coefficient second.
- F = a moderate, very streetable friction level. Most factory-style Silverado pads live here (
FF). - G = a higher friction level — more aggressive bite.
Two rules that save you grief:
- Match the edge code across an axle. Mismatched pads left-to-right can pull the truck under braking.
- Use the edge code to compare, not the marketing. “Premium” and “severe-duty” are words;
FFvsGGis a spec. When two pads claim the same thing at different prices, the edge code and the compound tell you which is actually which.

Wear indicators: know before you’re metal-on-metal
Most Silverado pads have a mechanical wear indicator — a small spring-steel tab that contacts the rotor and makes a high-pitched squeal when the pad gets thin. That squeal is a feature, not a failure: it’s telling you to order pads now, while there’s still material left. Some HD applications and aftermarket sets add an electronic sensor that lights a dash warning instead.
Either way, don’t wait for grinding. Metal-on-metal means you’ve scored the rotor, and now you’re buying rotors too. As a rough rule, plan to inspect pads by around 30,000-40,000 miles depending on how you drive and load the truck, and keep an eye (and ear) out after that. Bedding new pads (the step everyone skips)
New pads don’t reach full performance until they’re bedded — a controlled heat cycle that lays an even transfer layer of friction material onto the rotor. Skip it and you invite squeal, uneven bite, and shudder.
The general method (always defer to your pad maker’s printed instructions):
- After install, make about 8-10 moderate stops from ~35 to ~5 mph, easing off before a complete stop.
- Follow with 2-3 firmer stops from a higher speed — brisk, not panic.
- Never come to a full stop or hold the pedal during the sequence — sitting on hot pads can imprint material and cause pulsing.
- Then drive gently for a few miles to let the brakes cool.
Ten minutes of bedding is the difference between brakes that feel factory-new and brakes that annoy you for the life of the pad.
