Silverado Wheel & Tire Fitment Guide: Bolt Pattern, Offset & Tire Sizes by Lift

Nothing kills a wheel-and-tire purchase faster than the wrong numbers. A Silverado wheel that “looks like it fits” can still be the wrong bolt pattern, sit too far in or out, or rub the fender at full lock. The good news: three numbers settle almost everything. The three numbers that decide fitment
- Bolt pattern — how many lugs and how far apart. A wheel either bolts up or it doesn’t.
- Hub bore — the center hole. It has to clear the truck’s hub, and ideally sit hub-centric for a smooth ride.
- Offset / backspacing — how far in or out the wheel sits, which controls stance and whether it rubs.
Nail those and you’re 90% of the way there. Let’s take them in order.
Bolt pattern & hub bore
The half-ton Silverado 1500 uses a 6x139.7mm pattern — that’s six lugs on a 5.5-inch circle (you’ll see it written both ways). This has held from the 1999 model year — the start of the GMT800 generation, per the Chevrolet Silverado production history on Wikipedia — through the current trucks, which is why the 1500 has such a deep aftermarket wheel selection.
The heavy-duty 2500/3500 trucks run 8 lugs, and here the pattern changed with the generations: older HDs use 8x165.1mm (8x6.5”), while 2011-and-newer HDs moved to 8x180mm. If you’ve got a 3/4- or 1-ton, confirm which one before buying — the two 8-lug patterns are not interchangeable.
The hub bore on the 1500 is about 78.1mm. A wheel with a larger bore will physically fit but should use hub-centric rings so the wheel centers on the hub rather than the lug studs — that’s what prevents steering-wheel vibration at speed. Offset & backspacing, in plain English
Offset is how far the wheel’s mounting face is from its true centerline, measured in millimeters:
- High positive offset pulls the wheel inward, toward the truck. This is where the factory wheels live.
- Low or negative offset pushes the wheel outward — the aggressive “poke” stance that fills the fenders.
Backspacing measures the same thing from the back of the wheel to the mounting face, in inches. Lower offset = less backspacing = more poke.
Here’s the trade-off a 20-year Silverado owner learns the hard way: dropping to a much lower offset looks fantastic, but it lengthens the lever arm on your wheel bearings and can throw the tire into the fender liner or control arm at full steering lock. If you’re staying close to stock height, keep the offset in the neighborhood of factory. If you’re running a lift or leveling kit, you have more room to go wider — just confirm the specific offset your kit maker recommends for the tire size you want.
Factory wheel & tire sizes
The 1500 has shipped with everything from 17s to 22s depending on trim and year. As a general reference:
- 17” / 18” wheels — the workhorse sizes, common on WT and LT trims; the friendliest for a taller all-terrain tire.
- 20” wheels — the most common upgrade size, standard on many LT/LTZ/RST trucks; a great balance of looks and sidewall.
- 22” wheels — factory on High Country and premium packages; sharp looks, but a shorter sidewall rides firmer and is less forgiving off-pavement.
The bigger the wheel, the shorter the tire sidewall for the same overall diameter — so a taller, more capable tire is easier to fit on a 17 or 18 than on a 22. That’s why a lot of off-road builds actually step down to a 17- or 18-inch wheel.
Tire size by lift height
This is the question everyone asks, so here’s the honest version. Overall tire diameter — not just width — is what determines rubbing, and the answer always depends on your exact wheel offset and trim. As a starting point:
- Stock — roughly a 32-inch-equivalent tire (think 265/70R17, 275/60R20 and similar factory fitments).
- 2” leveling kit — typically opens up 33s with an appropriate offset; the single most popular Silverado stance.
- 4” lift — 33s to 35s become comfortable.
- 6”+ lift — room for 35s, and 37s on the taller kits with the right wheels.
Bigger tires change your effective gear ratio and speedometer reading, so plan for that if you jump several sizes. And whatever you land on, verify the exact tire size against your specific kit, wheel offset, and model year before ordering — a half-inch of backspacing is the difference between clean clearance and a fender that eats rubber.
Don’t forget the alignment (and the supporting parts)
New wheels and tires — especially at a new offset or ride height — change your suspension geometry. Budget for an alignment afterward, and if you’re running worn front-end components, fresh tie rods, ball joints, or control arms will hold that alignment far longer.
